Rob Aarsen
Rob Aarsen started diving in 1982. He has been photographing since 1991, then still analogue. Rob considers himself an all-round underwater photographer with a slight preference for landscapes and wide-angle with model. Besides a job as communications consultant, Rob is chief editor of Onderwatersport Magazine, the magazine of the Dutch Underwater Sports Association. For that, he does a lot of reportage work. If there is any time left, he photographs for the NOB's textbooks. With model photography in the pool, Rob has taken a new direction since last year. Nothing on land comes close to the light, colours, shapes and textures you encounter underwater, he believes. The underwater world, be it a diving tank or the open sea, is an endless source of inspiration and possibilities.
Rob photographs with a Nikon D810 in a Nauticam housing. Since the early days, the flash units have been Sea&Sea. First a YS-350 and a YS-90 Duo (still going), then two YS-D1s and now two YS-D3 'Lightning' strobes with snoots and dome diffusers. Rob finds the flashes powerful, compact, with a short recycling time and very reliable. In all these years and tens of thousands of photos, Rob has never missed a shot because the flashes did not go off.
